As I get ready for our February snow bird escape to Hilton Head and Vero Beach, one thing I always plan ahead for is food. Not because I don’t love dining out (I do!), but because meal planning is one of the biggest ways I keep our family vacations affordable, flexible, and far less stressful.

- Simple snacks paired together (fruit, crackers, protein)
Nothing fancy—just food that keeps us moving.
Dinner: Where I Get Creative (Yes, Even With a Microwave)
Dinner is where hotel room dining really shines. This is where I’ve learned that vacation food doesn’t have to look like home food—and that’s part of the fun.
Some of our favorites:
- Quesadillas with refried beans, canned chicken, and cheese
- Microwave pasta with Alfredo or marinara sauce and chicken

These meals are filling, budget-friendly, and surprisingly satisfying after a full day outside.

When You Do Have a Kitchen
If your hotel or rental has a full kitchen, that just opens the door wider—but it’s not required. A stovetop or oven allows for more variety, but the heart of hotel meal planning stays the same: keep it simple and realistic. Last February, I made chicken Alfredo and tuna noodle casserole back to back tonights in our hotel room and my kids thought it was so cool to have some comfort foods on vacation.
Vacation is not the time to experiment with complicated recipes. Familiar meals = happy kids = smoother trips.
