What We Actually Eat on Road Trips (Easy Make-Ahead Recipes)

One of the easiest ways I keep our road trips running smoothly is by prepping food at home before we ever hit the road. Traveling with kids means hunger can turn into crankiness fast, and having familiar, ready-to-eat meals on hand saves time, money, and a whole lot of stress. These are my favorite road trip recipes—simple, travel-friendly foods like chicken salad, egg bites, chocolate chip pancake bites, protein balls, and zucchini muffins—that we make ahead and pack along to keep everyone fueled, happy, and ready for the adventure ahead.

These are recipes that I make at home before leaving on our road trip. After making each recipe, I portion them individually in ziplock bags and pack them in our car refrigerator. Outside of the chicken salad, most of these will provide us with breakfast options throughout the entire vacation, not just during the drive.

Egg Bites

Egg bites are one of my favorite things to make for family road trips because they’re incredibly easy, filling, and perfect for eating on the go. I love that they freeze beautifully, which means I can prep them ahead of time and pull them out as needed without any extra stress. They’re also endlessly customizable—I can add vegetables to sneak in extra nutrition while still keeping them kid-approved, and somehow both kids and adults happily reach for them every time.

Chocolate Chip Pancake Bites

Chocolate chip pancake bites are a road trip favorite in our house, and my kids absolutely adore them. They’re easy to make ahead of time, freeze beautifully, and are the perfect grab-and-go option for early mornings or snack breaks in the car. We sometimes swap the chocolate chips for blueberries to change things up, which makes them just as delicious and a little extra wholesome while still being a hit with everyone.

Chocolate Chip Banana Zucchini Muffins

Chocolate chip banana zucchini muffins are one of my go-to road trip bakes because they’re wholesome, flexible, and perfect for busy travel days. I love using both chocolate chips and bananas for the best flavor, but this recipe works just as well with just chocolate chips or just bananas depending on what I have on hand. They’re a healthier option that works for both breakfast and snacks on the road, making them a reliable favorite for the whole family.

Protein Balls

Protein balls are one of my all-time favorite road trip snacks because they check every box: easy, filling, and endlessly customizable. The base recipe couldn’t be simpler—just peanut butter (or another nut or seed butter), honey, and oats—and that simplicity is exactly why I love it. I’ve been making these peanut butter energy bites since my kids were little (at least seven years now!), and they’ve always been a favorite in our house. Over the years I’ve experimented with all kinds of optional add-ins, but the core ingredients never change, which makes this recipe inexpensive, approachable, and perfect for busy families. Simple recipes with minimal ingredients are always my style, and these protein balls are the perfect example of that.

Chicken Salad

Chicken salad sandwiches are an absolute staple on every single road trip we take. I love how versatile this option is—we’ve made it with canned chicken or with a rotisserie chicken in a hotel room when we’re on the road. The optional add-ins make it easy to customize for everyone’s tastes, and it works perfectly for both lunch and dinner. It’s a healthier, more filling, and far more budget-friendly alternative to fast food, which makes it a go-to choice for keeping our road trips simple and stress-free.

At the end of the day, these are the foods we actually eat on our road trips—nothing fancy, just simple, reliable recipes that make travel days easier and more enjoyable. Taking a little time to prep meals at home saves money, cuts down on fast food stops, and helps everyone feel better fueled throughout the day. Having familiar, ready-to-eat options on hand means fewer meltdowns, less stress, and more time focused on the journey itself—which is always worth it.

These are some of our favorite gadgets that I use when prepping our road trip foods. I earn a small commission from purchases made from these links.

Hand Mixer

Immersion Blender

Car Refrigerator

Nonstick Muffin Pan

Snack Size Bags [I use these for the egg bites, pancake bites, protein balls, and zucchini muffins. The size of these works better than the snack bags at Target]
